The Shofar is deeply rooted in Biblical history. Its blasts called the Jews to war and brought military victory. During the period of the Judges, when the Jews were heavily oppressed by the Midianite nation, Gideon was appointed by G-d to lead a rebellion. He went into battle with only 300 fighting men. With total trust in G-d, they approached the enemy holding a Shofar in one hand and a flaming torch and empty pitcher in the other hand. The piercing wail of the Shofar combined with the crash of broken pitchers and the flames of the torches terrified the Midianites and convinced that a huge army was approaching they fled.
