Yemenite Jews have an ancient tradition of long spiral Shofars. Today, these Shofars are popular throughout the world. They originate from the Kudu, a large antelope found in south or east Africa.
The Shofar is a hollowed-out horn usually from a ram. Every Shofar is a unique combination of bends, curves, spirals and length. These make up the differences in sound of each Shofar. The mouthpiece, at the narrow end, is always plain. The small Shofars are about 8 to 10 inches long and produce high pitched sounds. The longer Shofars, up to 36 inches, produce deeper and richer tones. A length of 17 inches and over is recommended for the bal tokeah – the one who blows on Rosh Hashanah for the Congregation.
When purchasing this shofar you will receive our informative Shofar Guide with tips on blowing and caring for your shofar.
